Waterbury Public Schools Will Expand Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School to Serve 6th Grade

WATERBURY- Waterbury Public Schools is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 school year at Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School will expand and serve 6th grade students. Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School is currently a Pre-K through grade five school with 628 total students. Students attending Maloney reside in Waterbury and surrounding towns: Thomaston, Plymouth, and Wolcott.

Elementary school expansion is part of a larger facilities master plan to determine expansion opportunities for several schools and programs within the district. Projections and suggestions for expansion are based on community expressed interest and a future increase in city population and student enrollment. The district hopes to eventually expand Maloney Interdistrict Magnet school to serve both 7th and 8th graders in the near future.

“At Waterbury, we look to provide opportunities within our school system to serve all students for great success,” said Superintendent Dr. Verna D. Ruffin. “We remain committed to listen and hear from parents, families and students regarding the types of quality programs they seek to advance their children.  Waterbury Public Schools is poised to present these opportunities to our families.”

Acceptance to Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School is based on a random lottery system and availability of space. The application period and lottery for Pre-K through 5th grade ran during designated dates in the month of February.

“This is a great opportunity to watch our students grow academically and socially as they transition to grade 6,” said Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School Principal, Diane Bakewell. “We are excited to continue to see our students thrive in a magnet school environment.”
