Waterbury Career Academy Wins State Championship in Boys’ Basketball

WATERBURY- Waterbury Career Academy (WCA) boy’s basket is the 2023 Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division III state champion. WCA Spartans, competing in only its eighth year as a varsity program, captured the school’s first CIAC title in any sport.

The Spartans, the No. 2 seeds in the tournament, closed out their championship run with a 74-58 finals victory over top seed Bloomfield High School on Sunday, March 19, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. WCA junior Drew Williams scored 36 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 18 rebounds during the title game.

Earlier this month, WCA claimed its first Naugatuck Valley League championship. Head coach Ronan O’Leary’s squad completed the 2022-23 season with a 10-game winning streak and a won-lost record of 24-3. The Spartans were voted to the No. 5 spot in the final GameTimeCT Top 10 Poll.

WCA is the first Waterbury-based school to win a state championship in boys’ basketball since Sacred Heart High in 2017. The Spartans are the first Waterbury Public School to do so since Crosby High in 2008.
